Are Car Keys Waterproof?

Are Car Keys Waterproof?

Well that depends. Most chip keys are in fact waterproof. But the Keyless Entry remote funcition is usually not.

Going to a beach should be fun. But how many times have you stepped out of your car, and jumped in the beach and bam, you forgot to take the keys out of your pocket and now they are soaking wet. So what now?

Well, it really depends on what type of car key you have. If you have a remote key then chances are the remote is now dead. However you should still be able to start the car. The reason for this is that remote keys such as the 2005 Honda Accord remote key as seen below has both a circuit board which powers the keyless entry remote and also has a little transponder chip which is needed to drive the car. The Keyless Entry remote portion most likely will not work anymore but you should still be able to start the car and drive. Whoo, that was a close call.

2004 - 2012 Honda Remote keys have two separate chips, one that works the keyless entry (the buttons), and the other that communicates with the immobilizer to start the engine. The remote is not waterproof but the transponder chip is (however don’t push it).
